Cole-Talbert: American soprano (c1890-1961) as Aida. First black singer to
perform Aida with a white European opera company (1927: Teatro Comunale in
Cosenza). First black director of the voice department at the Tuskegee
Institute in Alabama. Coached La Julia Rhea. First black classical artist to
record for the historic "race" label, Black Swan. She wrote the
national hymn of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
(16) Milka Ternina: Croatian soprano (19 Dec 1863 - 18
May 1941): Debut Zagreb 1882 as Amelia. First London Tosca. First NY Tosca and
Kundry (banned from Bayreuth for singing in this unapproved performance).
Repertory of 85 roles. Forced by paralysis to retire in 1916. (17) Paul Trede (in Rosenkavalier).
