Nikolaidi, Elena: Turkish contralto (Izmar, Turkey: 29 Jun 1906 - Santa Fe: NM: 14 Nov 2002): Trained at the Greek National Conservatory. Began singing at the Athens Lyric Theatre. Member of the Wiener Staatsoper (1936-1948), Salzburg, Covent Garden, La Scala, Prague. Came to United States in 1948 where she sang at the Town Hall in Manhattan, Carnegie Hall (with the NY Philharmonic). American operatic debut at the San Francisco Opera (1950) as Amneris. Metropolitan Opera. Voice Faculty of Florida State University (Tallahassee), and the Houston Opera Studio. Her students included Denyce Graves, Erie Mills, Bruce Ford and Eric Halkvarson.
