Last update: 15 May 2010 :
The Tivoli Opera House, the most reputable theater in
San Francisco at the time, produced a series of postcards featuring singers
appearing there during the 1903 Italian Grand Opera Season. During this
season Mascagni conducted his Cavalleria Rusticana, which was paired with a
lesser-known opera, Zanetto. The 1700-seat Opera House was destroyed during
the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906. This opera house, one of
several in the city, was in full use from 1890 to 1900 and existed as far
back as 1879. Grand opera was held in the winter and lighter fare, such as
Gilbert and Sullivan, was presented in the summer. From 1900 to 1903 grand
opera was still being presented at the Tivoli but on a limited basis. Two
singers of note who appeared at the Tivoli early in their careers were Alice
Nielsen and Luisa Tetrazzini. Postcards in this set are extremely difficult
to find.
