BAYREUTH SINGERS - 7

(1) American Wagnerian soprano Minnie Saltzman-Stevens (1894-1950) as Sieglinde. On the recommendation of her vocal instructor, Jean de Reszke, her debut (1909) came as Brünnhilde in an English version of the Ring cycle at Covent Garden. She performed at the Bayreuth Festivals of 1911 and 1913.

(2) German baritone Eduard Habich (1880-1960) as Alberich in Der Ring des Nibelungen. He sang principally at the Berlin Royal Opera (1910-30). He made many appearances at Covent Garden in the 1920s, and appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in 1935, where he sang for two seasons.

(3) Robert Burg (Prague: 29 Mar 1890 - Dresden: 9 Feb 1946) as Klingsor. Czech baritone. He studied in Prague, where he made his début in 1915. After a season at Augsburg, he joined the company at Dresden and remained there from 1916 to the time of his death. (5) Austrian tenor Rudolf Ritter (Brux, Austria: 19 Jan 1878 - ) as Siegfried. He was at first an army officer. He studied voice in Vienna, and made his debut at the Vienna Volksoper in 1910. It was there that he sang the role of Primus Thaller in the world premiere of Der Kubreigen (1911). His Siegfried was seen at the 1924 and 1925 Bayreuth Festivals, which is a good indication of the approximate date of these postcards. Ritter was part of the 1930 German Opera Company which toured many western and mid-west cities in the United States.

(6) German tenor Joachim Sattler (Affoltersbach, Germany: 21 Aug 1899 - ) as Melot (Tristan und Isolde). Siegfried Wagner discovered his voice. He made his debut (1926) in Wuppertal as Claudio in Das Liebsverbot. He sang at the Bayreuth Festivals during the 1928 through 1931 seasons. In addition to Melot, he sang Froh as well as other small roles there. He also appeared at the Hamburg State Opera, Darmstadt, Vienna State Opera, Amsterdam, Dresden State Opera, the Teatro Liceo, the Zoppot Festivals, Switzerland, and in Kassel (1957).
